We're sold deprivation diets and hours of gym time as the only solution to getting to a healthy weight. However, there are women in different cultures around the world who never diet or set foot in the gym-yet somehow stay slim. What gives?

After living in Europe for several years while my husband was in the military and seeing the “French Paradox” first- hand, I realize how these women enjoy food and stay slim. It comes down to their habits around food and activity that are part of their culture.

They eat small portions of very high quality food, they take their time savoring their meals, they don’t eat a lot of processed food, and they walk everywhere.

SO DO WE ALL HAVE TO MOVE TO FRANCE TO BE SLIM?

It would be nice, but of course the answer is no.

Although we don’t have our weight loss habits built into our culture like French women do, we can develop our own personal collection of healthy habits.

We can borrow some of those weight-lowering habits from the French, but we don’t have to. We get to craft our own individualized “health culture.” We have the opportunity to tailor our new habits or culture to our own lives, our own bodies, and even our own likes and dislikes.

HI, I'M TREVA GARCIA, A REGISTERED DIETITIAN/ NUTRITIONIST, CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER, AND CERTIFIED HEALTH COACH.

After my struggle with thyroid disease, I had 40-50 pounds of very resistant weight to take off. I was frustrated with my slow metabolism, hormone imbalances, insulin resistance, and chronic disease. I knew "what I should be doing to lose weight," but it wasn't working nor could I force myself to do it.
